Alberta’s own Heartland, a beloved staple of Canadian television, has been warming the hearts of folks like us for years.

It’s no wonder it’s the longest-running scripted show in our nation’s history.

Now, with the family drama available on Netflix, fans from all corners of the globe are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Season 18 this fall (though we’re still waiting on an official release date).

Since its debut in 2007, Heartland has captivated us with the touching tales of the Fleming sisters and their families. Last season left us hanging with several unresolved storylines, and we’re all on tenterhooks to see what the next chapter holds for Amy, Lou, and Jackand their loved ones.

The cast and crew have been hard at work since May, filming in High River and throughout the Foothills.

The show, based on the book series by Lauren Brooke, has always been centred around family life on a horse ranch. But with the last season ending with questions about Amy’s love life and the future of the ranch, we’re all speculating about what’s to come.

Let’s take a moment to ponder some of the most pressing questions and potential plot twists:

1. Amy’s Journey Towards Healing

The journey of daughter, horse whisperer, and widow Amy Fleming has been the focal point of Heartland. Her path of healing and self-discovery has been a central theme through the years. Last season saw Amy continue to grapple with her new reality as a singel mom after the tragic loss of her husband, Ty.

After fending off rodeo star-turned-dad Caleb’s amorous advances, Amy cozied up to Nathan, the heartsick, relationship-cynic cowboy who’s inherited control of the neighbouring cattle ranch.

While Amy, portrayed by Amber Marshall, made significant strides in dealing with her grief and rebuilding her life with her daughter, Lyndy, the season finale hinted at new challenges and opportunities for growth.

Many questions were left unanswered.

  • Will Amy find a new romance next season?
  • Will the budding romance between Amy and Nathan challenge her to open her heart again?

The image of Amy, Lyndy and Nathan sky gazing in a meadow on a blanket hinted at something, but we’ll have to see.

2. Lou’s Career Ambitions

Over the last few seasons, big-sis Lou Fleming’s foray into politics added an intriguing layer to her character. As the mayor of Hudson, Lou faced numerous challenges, from balancing her professional responsibilities with her family life to navigating the complexities of local politics.

Last season, after a narrow loss to her former assistant, Lou–played by Calgary’s own Michelle Morgan–had trouble adjusting to her post-mayoral career. She bounced between helping Jessica–her Dad Tim’s new wife–set up a community gallery and developing a plan to save Heartland Beef

The next season could delve deeper into Lou’s attempts to resuscitate her political career, or will Lou put her energy into reimagining the family cattle and ranching businesses?

3. Jack’s Legacy

Jack Bartlett, Heartland’s patriarch, remains the show’s moral centre. His wisdom and resilience have guided the family through many trials, but the last season raised questions about the future of the ranch and Jack’s legacy.

Having lost Heartland Beef’s main buyer and with competitors lurking, Season 18 will likely delve into Jack’s struggle to preserve the ranch and address the financial challenges that threaten its future.

  • How will Jack handle these challenges?
  • Will Jack give up some control of Heartland Beef to Lou?
  • Will Jack’s health deteriorate?

Will the upcoming season focus on Jack mentoring the younger generation, particularly Lyndy, as he imparts his knowledge and values?

4. Tim’s Evolving Relationships

Lou and Amy’s Dad, Tim Fleming, has always been complex. Last season saw him grappling with his past mistakes while trying to forge stronger bonds with his family. His romantic relationship with his new wife, Jessica was also a focal point, providing moments of both tension and tenderness. In the last few episodes, Tim reunited with his son Shane and his son’s fiancé Chloe.

There were no loose ends hanging in last season’s final episodes, but our spidey sense says that in the upcoming season, Tim might face new challenges that test his commitment to Jessica and his family. This could include health scares, business ventures, or past issues resurfacing. Watching Tim navigate these challenges could provide compelling drama and character development.

5. The Kid’s Grow Up

Young Lyndy, Amy and Ty’s daughter, is growing up amidst the backdrop of the ranch. Her experiences and growth become more central to the story last season. Lyndy overcame her sudden fear of horses to demonstrate an Amy-like sixth sense as a trainer.

In the coming season, will Lyndy play a more prominent role, perhaps showcasing her budding interest in horses or developing her unique talents?

Katie, Lou and Peter’s teenage daughter, also pushed her boundaries over the last few seasons. First, standing up for herself and other employees at the restaurant Maggie’s, then overcoming her fear and pushing boundaries on her motorcycle.

Will Katie develop a romantic interest in the coming season?

Will the series delve into the growing pains as Katie prepares to leave the nest?

6. Georgie’s Olympic Dream

Lou’s adopted daughter, Georgie Fleming-Morris, has been on-screen less in the last few seasons as she’s off in Europe pursuing her show jumping career.

Georgia, portrayed by Alisha Newton, wants to become an Olympic show jumper.

When the new season is released this fall, fans are hoping to see more of Georgia, but questions remain:

  • Will she return as a major character?
  • Will she overcome more hurdles and fulfill her Olympic dream?

We’re going to have to wait and see.

Final Thoughts

Heartland has always excelled in weaving together the lives and stories of its characters with grace and authenticity. The loose ends from the last season set the stage for an exciting and emotionally rich new chapter that begins this fall (we’re guessing in October, but no release date has yet been announced).

Whether it’s through personal growth, romantic developments, or the pursuit of dreams, the upcoming season promises to continue the legacy of heartwarming and inspiring storytelling that fans have come to love.

One thing is sure: the next season will undoubtedly bring more of the love, resilience, and community spirit that make Heartland a cherished show for fans here at home and around the world.
