Tucked away on the eastern edge of Banff National Park lies Ya Ha Tinda Ranch, the only federally operated ranch in Canada. Parks Canada has managed the ranch since 1917.

Ya Ha Tinda Ranch is about 85 kilometres west of Sundre and approximately 200 kilometres northwest of Calgary.

It covers a massive 3,900 hectares of land, bordered by the Red Deer River and the Rockies. That’s about 3,900 sports fields for scale. The ranch serves two purposes.

It is a working ranch where horses are trained for use by park wardens in Canada’s national parks. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore our province’s landscape.

The ranch is also steeped in rich history. “Ya Ha Tinda” comes from the Stoney Nakoda language and translates to “Mountain Prairie.”

Prehistoric bison remains, arrowheads, tipi rings, and eagle trapping pits have been found in the region, confirming the presence of Indigenous peoples, notably the Stoney Nakoda, in the area.

These groups used the land for hunting, gathering, and spiritual practices. The region was rich in wildlife, including elk, deer, and bighorn sheep.

The rolling foothills and the nearby rivers also provided fertile grounds for foraging and fishing, making it an important location for the local tribes.

Today, the area remains a significant habitat for wildlife, including wolves, bears, cougars, bighorn sheep, moose, and deer, and is an important wintering site for about 1,000 elk

The land where Ya Ha Tinda Ranch now sits was part of the traditional territories of the Stoney Nakoda people, who have lived in the region for centuries.

The Evolution of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch

The ranch’s history is closely tied to the development of Canada’s national parks system. At the start of the 20th century, the Brewster Brothers Transfer Company obtained a grazing lease in the region.

Within a decade, they had begun raising and training horses for their guiding and outfitting operations.

These horses spent the winter on the ranch before being moved to Banff and Lake Louise for use in the summer months.

By 1917, Parks Canada started using the site to train horses for patrolling and safeguarding the Western National Parks.

Originally, the Ya Ha Tinda ranch area was within the boundaries of Banff National Park, which was called Rocky Mountain National Park back then.

However, as the park boundaries were redrawn and Banff National Park was established, the land became a designated area for the winter breeding and training of park horses.

Today, Ya Ha Tinda is a unique property owned and managed by Parks Canada, located just outside Banff National Park’s current boundaries.

Thankfully, Parks Canada isn’t all work and no play. Hunting, hiking, and horse travel are permitted on the ranch property, but not within the ranch’s fenced pastures.

If you want to go camping, the nearby Bighorn Campground is free of charge. Just bear in mind that grizzly bears and black bears frequent the area.

Parks Canada’s website has a full list of rules and guidelines for visiting Ya Ha Tinda Ranch or Bighorn Campground.

There are also many outdoor opportunities in the surrounding area, such as sightseeing at Bighorn Falls or fishing along the Red Deer River.

Ya Ha Tinda Ranch offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and outdoor adventure, making it worth the visit if you want to soak in some of our province’s best.
