The Most Overlooked Mountain Town to Visit in Winter

For those seeking a peaceful winter escape, Waterton offers a rare opportunity to indulge in the tranquillity of nature, far from the bustling tourist hotspots

If you’re looking for a true winter escape, far from the crowds and the hustle and bustle of places like Canmore, Banff and Jasper, then the sleepy little town of Waterton in Waterton Lakes National Park may be just the ticket.

Waterton is a tiny town set in immense scenery.

In the summer, the town has just over 100 residents but gets 500,000 visitors annually, mainly during July and August.

In the winter, only about 30 residents remain, and the number of visitors drops to just a handful per week. Most businesses board up for the season.

So why would you want to visit?

The My Waterton website lists the following reasons to visit Waterton in winter:

  • More Space, Less Crowds – Enough said!
  • More wildlife, fewer cars – Although amazing to watch, please remember to practice wildlife safety.
  • More relaxation – Escape the hustle and bustle.
  • More savings – Off-season rates are available in the winter, with rates starting at $79 per person!

These all sound great, but are there any places to stay or eat?

Fortunately, there are four hotels and two restaurants open in Waterton during the winter, and if you want more variety, the town of Pincher Creek is just a 45-minute drive from Waterton.
