Some families start a business. Others take to the ice. That’s exactly what the Sawka family has done and continues to do.
The Okotoks Oilers recently announced that Hunter Sawka would be joining the team. Hunter won’t just be joining the team though, he will be joining his family. Literally.
Hunter is one one four siblings. Tanner Sawka is the oldest of the brothers and played for the Okotoks Oilers from 2019 to 2021.
During his time with the team, Tanner racked up 60 games over four seasons. Aside, there’s also Parker Sawka who is currently the goaltender for the Okotoks Oilers.
While the three brothers call the Okotoks Oilers home, their older sister had her sights set elsewhere.
Taylor Sawka, the oldest of her siblings, plays as a forward for the Mount Royal Cougars.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, she previously played for NCAA hockey at Clarkson University.
It goes without saying that Taylor set the bar high and served as inspiration for her three brothers.
The brothers have certainly made a name for themselves in the Okotoks Oilers.
Having only joined the team recently, Hunter has scored three goals and eights assists over the course of eight games.
Parker on the other hand celebrated his third career shutout at the AJHL Showcase at the start of October.
“Parker has got the capability of being an elite goalie in this league and he just has to have that confidence, but we’re excited for him this year,” said Okotoks Oilers’ coach and General Manager Tyler Dies to Okotoks Today.
If you are going up against the Okotoks Oilers, Hunter and Parker are a tough duo to beat. While Hunter is scoring, Parker is guarding the net like his life depended on it.
Just recently, on October 10, 2022, the Okotoks Oilers took home a 8-3 victory over the Olds Grizzlies at the Okotoks Centennial Arena.
Will the Sawka family keep its tradition alive for future generations? Only time will tell, but for now, Hunter and Parker will continue tearing up the ice.
