Creative Combat: 12 Artists, 20 Minutes, One Wild Art Brawl in Canmore!

Part sporting event, part art party, Creative Combat brings together the Bow Valley’s finest artists in a spirited competition for the ultimate speed-painting crown

Art is often created with time, space, and well-thought-out inspiration. But only not always!

Sometimes, the greatest works emerge in a race against time and other artists—for a good cause!

“12 artists, 20 minutes, and a drive to create.”

This is the tagline artsPlace uses for their “Combat Art” night. It’s far from your average paint night!

The organization’s competitive art events bring artists together to push the limits of their creative expression.

ArtsPlace fund development manager Becky Lipton Fournier told the Rocky Mountain Outlook that it usually brings a zen environment and all the energy of a knockout sporting event!

“It’s just a super fun, wild party. There’s great food, great people and great music, and then, of course, it’s super entertaining to watch these amazing artists pull off a super cool piece of art in 20 minutes,” she said.

Sound like a good time?

You might be precisely who artsPlace is looking for!

Ready for the Challenge?

ArtsPlace has been throwing competitive art events for the last few years, and they’re looking for more Bow Valley artists to take part in their next fundraiser.

By participating, competitors will showcase their work and hone their speed painting skills.

Plus, they’ll connect with a thriving arts community in Canmore.

Maria Raynolds is just one participant in the organization’s programs. She and her husband moved into town without many expectations, but artsPlace exceeded all of them!

ArtsPlace is the highlight of our social life,” she wrote.

“The variety of programs and the eclectic choices of films, activities, and performances give this town so much variety, one would not expect from a small place in the Canadian Rockies.”

The artsPlace website states that the organization came about as a collaborative effort “built by and for Canmore and the Bow Valley to service our collective creative and community aspirations.”

Over the past almost decade, artsPlace has become a cornerstone of what makes the valley home for so many people, and you can be a part of it.

The collective welcomes applications from emerging visual artists of all backgrounds.

If you’re chosen to participate in the Creative Combat 10.0 event, which will take place next fall, you’ll have access to mentorship from an established artist, as well as acrylic paints, materials, and space to practice!

There are only 12 spots, and not all artists who apply will be selected. The application deadline is  5pm on May 23rd, and you’ll be notified if you’re accepted by the end of June at the latest.

ArtsPlace has asked everyone to “Please spread the word to any other Bow Valley visual artist you know that might be interested!”
