Cochrane’s Arms Are Always Open

Discover the warm and welcoming community of Cochrane at the annual Leaves Abound from All Around event

Cochranites have some of the biggest hearts in the province. Whether offering their homes to Ukrainian refugees or sharing a pound of wings over a beer, Cochrane is all about community.

That’s exactly what the town’s annual Leaves Abound From All Around event is about (Leaves Abound). This year, the Cochrane Immigrant Services Committee (CISC) will host Leaves Abound on March 11, 2023.

The event will be held at BGC Cochrane and Area from 1 PM to 4 PM and will feature snacks, activities, music, door prizes, games, and more.

Leaves Abound is a great opportunity for community members to mingle and meet each other. More importantly, this event helps newcomers to Cochrane get to know the town, its people, and its available resources.

“We want to help folks navigate things in our community once they get here, they might have questions about, hey, I’d like to brush up my or learn English,  where can I get help to do that? I’m looking for housing. I’m looking for a job. I’m looking for mental health support,” Penelope Archer, Executive Director for the CISC, told Cochrane Now.

This free event will be open to anyone, whether you have lived in Cochrane all your life or just arrived.

To help newcomers feel settled in Cochrane, the CISC has put together resource cards for attendees. These cards feature a list of services available in town.

Last year, the event was held at the Historic Cochrane Ranche. The event featured booths from some of the town’s local resources and organizations.

This includes Cochrane Public Library, Seniors on the Bow, Helping Hands, and many more. There is no shortage of resources available for any present and future Cochranites!

Leaves Abound also featured a mouth-watering food selection from different cultures like the Philippines, Thailand, Germany, India, and Honduras.

“It’s a great way to learn about the resources we have in town, and also, it’s a great opportunity to meet the other newcomers and learn a little bit more about the other cultures in town. It’s a great way to make meaningful connections for sure,” said Kristina Kindtree, President of the CISC.

“We welcome all folks that are interested in like an ambassador to help us welcome folks…we’re always looking for volunteers. We’re always looking for people to participate,” commented Archer.

If you live in Cochrane and would like to lend a helping hand, the CISC is always looking for volunteers. If this year’s Leaves Abound event is anything like last year, it’s sure to be a good time!
