Calgary Songwriter Hits #1 on the Billboard’s Country Chart

Elizabeth Lowell co-wrote Beyonce’s “Texas Hold’Em” making history by topping the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart

If you haven’t heard of Elizabeth Lowell, she might be the next Albertan musician to become a household name.

The Calgary-born singer and songwriter, originally Elizabeth Lowell Boland, has slowly been gaining accolades in the music industry for years.

But she tends to stay behind the scenes, primarily a lyricist for other artists.

Lowell’s most recent collaboration, however, is too massive for her stay under wraps, and it’s put the spotlight on her in a big way.

Climbing the Charts

In a recent announcement, Lowell disclosed her involvement in co-writing global superstar Beyoncé’s newest track that swiftly climbed the charts to claim the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

The song, set to feature on Beyoncé’s upcoming studio album, Act II, promises to captivate audiences with its fusion of country influences and contemporary sounds.

Scheduled for release on March 29, 2024, Act II marks a significant departure for Beyoncé as she delves into the realm of country music.

The Country Capital

For Lowell, a Calgary native with a penchant for musical storytelling, that realm feels like home.

Lowell reminisced about her collaboration on the track in a now-deleted TikTok post about her Calgary roots, referring to the city as the “country capital of Canada.”

“Rodeo’d my way to Hollywood! I’m screaming! Yeeeeeehaw!” she said, overcome with excitement.

Not Her First Rodeo

The new song is a career milestone for Lowell.

But she is no newbie to the industry, having previously collaborated with a roster of notable artists, including The Beaches, Madison Beer, Hailee Steinfeld, and fellow Albertan popstar Tate McRae.

However, collaborating with a globally renowned artist like Beyoncé is groundbreaking and reaffirms her position as a formidable force in contemporary music.

But besides the personal accomplishment, the song she helped write is making history.

Another First

As Texas Hold’Em has risen to claim the No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country List – Beyoncé has become the first Black woman ever to achieve the prestigious spot.

The milestone shows a cultural shift for country music, a genre often seen as exclusively ‘white.’ The country charts have had a fraught relationship with artists of colour for decades.

For a local to be a part of changing this narrative is pretty damn cool and shows that country music is for everyone.

For those eager to experience the magic of “Texas Hold ‘Em,” the song is now available to stream on all major platforms.

The song’s infectious melodies and lyrics testify to the creative energy between Lowell and Beyoncé and how far you can get with some good old country grit and perseverance.

With Lowell releasing a solo album on the horizon, we hope to hear more of her standout rhythms soon!
