In recent years, standup paddleboarding (SUP) has become one of the fastest-growing water sports worldwide. Born from ocean surfing with its modern roots in Hawaii, SUP allows participants to stand on boards floating on water, using paddles to propel themselves forward. Since 2007, paddleboarding has also been adapted to flat water, and since then, SUP has evolved beyond just a niche sport to a favourite pastime on lakes, rivers, and oceans across the globe.

The Canadian Rockies have been no exception to the SUP craze. Just five years ago, seeing a paddleboard on local lakes was a rare sight, but now, these sleek boards are the most popular watercraft. Part of SUP’s appeal is its accessibility. Whether you’re an adventure enthusiast or just looking for a peaceful glide on the lake, it’s an activity that just about anyone can try. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to connect with nature, improve balance, and sneak in a core workout while enjoying breathtaking landscapes.

But it’s not just fitness fanatics getting in on the action. A spooky, magical twist has been sweeping across SUP culture: Witches Paddle events.

Over the last decade, witches have traded their broomsticks for paddleboards, donning hats and cloaks to glide on waters worldwide every October. These gatherings started in the U.S., and now they’ve spread far and wide, popping up in ponds, lakes, and harbours everywhere. What began as a quirky idea between friends has transformed into annual events that combine the joys of paddleboarding with a dash of Halloween spirit.

These events are not just about spellbinding outfits and Instagrammable moments. Some paddlers use the occasion to raise money for charities, while others come together simply for the joy of community and celebration. The magic of the witch paddles lies in their camaraderie and pure entertainment. It’s an opportunity for paddlers to embrace their inner witch, warlock, or wizard and have a few laughs. Plus it is just plain cool to see a lake full of floating witches!

On October 16th, Two Jack Lake in Banff National Park will host its unofficial Witches and Warlocks Paddle. At 12:30 PM, a host of Halloween enthusiasts will take to the water dressed in their finest spooky garb. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, fear not—there’s a backup date on October 23rd at 12:30 PM.

Here’s what you’ll need to bring to this silly, spooky afternoon:

  • Your favourite beverages to stay hydrated.
  • Your besties, because everything’s better with friends!
  • Life vests for safety (fashionable, of course!)
  • Snacks, because every witch needs a good treat.
  • A sprinkle of magic (or whatever else your witchy heart desires!)
  • Doggo familiars are welcome to join in the fun!

And don’t forget: witchy, wizard, or warlock attire is highly encouraged! Whether you’re waving a wand or wearing a witch hat, this event is about having fun, being a little silly, and enjoying the spectacular scenery of Two Jack Lake in the heart of the Rockies.

So dust off your broom—or, in this case, your paddle—and join in the enchantment. Expect waves of laughter, whimsical costumes, and plenty of photo-worthy moments. Whether you’re a seasoned SUP-er or a first-timer ready to try something new, this spellbinding event promises a wicked good time for all! There will even be SUPs for rent at the event for those without a board.
