Everyone’s favourite pale-skinned vampire and Hunger Games number one contestant are teaming up to film a new thriller movie in Calgary.

Robert Pattinson, famous for his role as Edward Cullen in Twilight, and Jennifer Lawrence, known for playing Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games movie series, will start filming for Die, My Love this week.

The two big-name actors will star in Die, My Love alongside LaKeith Stanfield, who starred in Selma, a Martin Luther King biopic, the TV series Atlanta, and even voices Guy in BoJack Horseman.  According to ACTRA, Die, My Love will be shot in the city and nearby areas from August 19 to October 8, meaning you could see some famous faces while out and about in Calgary.

So, what’s Die, My Love about?

The star-studded film is an adaptation of a 2019 novel of the same name from Argentine author Ariana Harwicz.

The film is directed by Lynne Ramsay, who you might know from her work on We Need to Talk About Kevin—the 2011 drama starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, and Ezra Miller.

Ramsay is also one of the writers, alongside Ariana Harwicz and Enda Walsh. The movie is described as a mix of comedy, drama, horror, and thriller, so expect some serious twists and turns.

According to the film’s IMDb profile, Die, My Love is about motherhood, womanhood, love, and desire. Set in the French countryside, the film’s unnamed protagonist struggles to keep her sanity while battling psychosis.

Psychosis is a mental health condition where a person loses touch with reality and can involve seeing, hearing, or believing things that aren’t real, like hallucinations or delusions.

Psychosis can make it hard for someone to know what’s real and what’s not, affecting their thoughts, emotions, and behaviour.

About three out of every 100 people will experience an episode of psychosis in their lifetime. Psychosis is a symptom of many mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Setting The Stage

The film’s unnamed protagonist is a wife and a mother to her newborn son, but she feels trapped in her role and looks for relief in increasingly unpredictable ways, like an affair.

“It’s about mental health…and the breakdown of a marriage. But it’s really f*****g funny. At least, I think it’s funny…But I’m Glaswegian, so I’ve a really black sense of humour,” Ramsay told Variety in an interview.

Die, My Love’s cast is perfect. Pattinson, Lawrence, and Stanfield are veterans and have experience working in thrillers or similar genres.

Since starring in Twilight as a sparkly vampire, Pattinson has starred in grittier, more mind-bendy films like The Batman and Tenet. Next year, the talented actor will be featured in Mickey 17, a sci-fi thriller.

While Lawrence is loved for her comedic personality, her acting range is impressive. She has starred in many very unsettling thriller and horror films, including Mother! and House at the End of the Street.

Stanfield is no stranger to the horror genre either. He plays a major role in The Changeling, an Apple TV+ series, and appeared in Get Out

Calgary is buzzing with more than just Die, My Love. My Life with the Walter Boys is currently filming its season until November 15, and a miniseries about JonBenét Ramsey kicks off production in September.

Alberta is a popular place to film, but not just because of its breathtaking landscapes. The Film and Television Tax Credit (FTTC) is a big reason productions are attracted to our province.

The FTTC offers productions an up to 30 percent refundable tax credit on eligible production costs. Over 175 productions have taken advantage of our province’s FTTC so far.

In June, Alberta announced changes to the FTTC that are expected to draw in even more production and generate a four-to-one return on investment for the government while creating jobs and supporting the economy.

Calgary is about to be a hot spot for some major productions, but if the recent changes to the FTTC are successful, we could see similar success in smaller communities.
