The Banff Mountain Film Festival is one of the world’s top international film competitions that annually showcases films and documentaries centred around mountain culture, sports, environment, and adventure.

Launched in 1976 by The Banff Centre, the festival is held every autumn in Banff. It has grown to become a significant event for adventurers, writers, photographers, and film directors from across the globe.

The 2023 edition of the festival, celebrating its 48th year, is set to be held from October 28 to November 5.

Attendees can expect a rich schedule of events spanning nine days. The festival will feature over 80 films, including world and North American premieres. These films are carefully selected from hundreds of entries, with themes ranging from climbing, skiing, and kayaking to biking and broader adventure narratives.

In addition to the film screenings, the festival offers live in-person events where adventurers, authors, photographers, and filmmakers share their inspiring stories.

Some highlights for 2023 include free climbing sessions with renowned climbers Ashima Shiraishi and Sonnie Trotter, an exclusive on-stage interview with alpinist Ian Welsted, and presentations from mountain photographer Alex Buisse and authors Dave Smart, Graham Zimmerman, and Jeff Smoot.

The festival director, Joanna Croston, emphasizes that this year’s festival celebrates the deep roots of mountain culture and climbing.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is more than just a local event. After the main festival concludes in November, a selection of the best films goes on a world tour, visiting approximately 800 cities in over 40 countries and reaching an audience of over 500,000. Each host city tailors the film selection to reflect the interests of their community, creating a unique celebration of adventure and local adventurers.

The Banff Mountain Book Festival takes place at the same time to celebrate mountain literature. This Festival segment features meetings with authors, readings, seminars, and an international book competition, further enriching the experience for attendees.

The Mountain Film Festival celebrates mountain culture, adventure, and the human spirit. Whether you’re an adventurer at heart, a film enthusiast, or someone who appreciates the beauty and challenges of mountain life, the festival promises a captivating experience.

The 2023 edition, with its diverse range of films and events, will be memorable for all attendees.
